You were likely taken advantage of by a small monopoly of companies that do paid political field work all over the country, and it is best for us to think of them as an American organized crime syndicate.

There's a small group of companies that are all exactly, 100% identical in the way they operate, and they share all teh business base don geography. They typically do not respect their hourly employees, and they only care about getting money for themselves. Their main victims are actually non-profits and political parties, but the hourly workers are the main people who suffer from their crimes.

Although many brand themselves as progressive, most of these companies are caught up in the business of legalizing sports gambling and providing services to all clients, regardless of their political ideology.

These companies operate as so-called "firms", and they generally employ canvassers through hundreds of shell companies that they open and close on a project-to-project basis. They literally open and close many dozens of LLCs every year, all over the country, isolely to avoid the liability and financial obligations of running a large company. It is all a part of their business model. They cheat the tax system, fleece their clients, and screw their temporary employees, all to maximize their personal incomes.

What happened to you was not your fault. You got mixed up with some really bad people, who were pretending to support some really great causes. At first you were excited to be a part of it, and that is to your credit.

It really sucks, but you're a great person for trying to do the job, and you were unlucky to get mixed up with one of these slimy companies.
